I AM THE WALRUS

December 8, 2005

ngayon nga pala ang 25th anniversary ng pagkapatay kay john lennon. naalala ko pa yung eksaktong oras na mabalitaan ko ito, sinalubong ako ng classmate ko sa corridor at sinabing nabaril nga si john at namatay. i was 14 years old at second year high school ng nangyari ito nung december of 1980. magulo ang mundo ko nung time na iyon dahil ito yung panahon na rocky ang relationship ng parents ko. pero kahit magulo eh masaya pa rin. karamihan sa amin ay dito namulat sa sex at marami ang nabinyagan sa mga casa sa avenida. nung panahong iyon, sikat pa yung coronet inn. malapit ito sa bumbero ng santa cruz at alas otso pa lang ng umaga ay bukas na. sabi ng classmate kong intsik, mas mabuti raw na pumunta ng maaga dahil bagong ligo pa yung mga nagtatrabaho roon. mayroon na ring mga nagtutulak ng damo sa amin nung 1980 at ito ang taon na naging regular ang aking paninigarillo. it would take me 24 years before i would stop. bwakanginangyan, kung di pa sasabog ang appendix ko, hindi ako hihinto.

all throughout this period, we were influenced by the music of the beatles. natuto akong mag gitara by playing the beatles chordbook na ni-release ng jingle magazine. si john ang paborito kong beatle. gusto ko kasi yung kanyang angst, twisted sense of humor at yung kakaibang abilidad sa pag gawa ng kanta. ang mga paborito ko?

    i remember CI from notre

  2. Napaka-gago talaga nung bumaril kay John. Ginamit pang sangkalan ang Catcher in the Rye.

Parang naiiyak nga ako pag naririnig ko ang piano section ng “In my life.” Gaya ng Day in Life, at Imagine, masterpiece ito na kinathan ng henyong si John Lennon.

John nasaan ka man, saludo ako sa iyo.

  3. tony Says:

fav ko rin ang “in my life”..
actually, magka generation tayo..yung tayo noon old school na ngayon sa mga 14 and 15s…kumbaga, mga ginawa natin noon, pinagtatawanan na lang nila ngayon..isa lang advantage natin, what we knew, who we knew back then that are still famous these days, di nila inabot.

  4. Jet Says:

Well, you know what my favorite Lennon song is… Just Like Starting Over.

  5. oo nga mylab. maganda rin yung kantang yon. it’s a pity that the song that was supposed to announce john’s re-emergence in the music scene would be his farewell song.

  6. yes, “in my life” was a great song. probably one of the best that john did. really heartfelt.

  7. Capt. Kupal Says:

  9. owen Says:

In My Life! – indeed a classic.

i only became aware of beatles when i started playing guitar din. i have the Jingle Chordbook din.

  12. rolly Says:

During the first years, sya ang main vocals until Paul took over. i think your definition of Janis Joplin would describe John’s voice, too. Earthy and raw, full of soul. And of course, sa Lennon/Mcartney songs, mas marami yata siyang ginawang memorable na lyrics alhough, I would concede, mas magaling gumawa ng tono si Paul.

Chapman denied the younger generation of what else John could have contributed to the world.

  13. jennipeng Says:

  14. Engr. Bogus Says:

  15. tama ka tito rolly, earthy and raw. pakinggan mo yung “twist and shout” ngayon, it still is impressive now as it was then. take one lang ito nang ma record dahil hindi na kaya ni john kumanta afterwards.

  16. dapat dalhin mo yung gitara mo sa singapore partner.

  17. roselle Says:

  18. arenar Says:

    Greetings

I was introduced to The Beatles when I was in 1st Year High School, there were four of us and sabi ng Teacher ko para kaming The Beatles kasi lagi kaming magkakasama – tapos ako raw si John Lennon dahil I was already wearing eyeglasses nung time na iyon … since then i was stuck with The Beatles … Sabi ng ni Mr. Blue Jeans during one of his broadcast sa DZRJ:

I wanted to be like The Beatles – But I could never write as fluently or as simply as they did – The Beatles contribution to Music was the ultimate contribution – They were to be all and end all of my record collection …

And yes i ended up collecting all The Beatles record and collector item books … and John yes he too is my favorite Beatle.

  20. Haring David Says:

ok pala ang tatay mo, roselle. magkakasundo kami.

  21. roselle Says:

naalala ko pa nga yung parang movie ba yon yung may kanta na… “get back..get back.. get back to where you once belong”…

  22. arenar Says:

siguro roselle is talking about the movie “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” which stars The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. I think that was in 1978 with Billy Preston playing as Sgt. Pepper.

Billy Preston actually played keyboard on Get Back which belong to the album Let It Be.

A little Beatle Trivia if you don’t mind. I can’t help it pare thanks.

  23. Isip Bata Says:

very good. yes they did a sgt. pepper’s movie that wasn’t really good. billy preston was there with the bee gees, aerosmith, earth wind and fire, peter frampton and steve martin.

and yes, a young billy preston played piano in get back. in fact, he played piano during the “let it be” recording. he was also there during that famous rooftop concert in london.

  24. Angela Says:

Naalala ko naging part din ng buhay ko si John Lenon noong 2000 kasi yung kaklase ko dinedicate niya sa akin ang kantang “In My Life” tapos ni-relate niya ang lyrics ng kanta sa buhay ko, hehe. 🙂

  25. Jakolito Says:

sige na nga, kwentuhan lang naman eh. ngyahaha. thank you sa update, ayusin ko ang mga links ko one of these days. ang dami nang sablay.

  26. S3ND0 Says:

For those who love beatles.. I’m sure you will love this movie “across the universe”.
