SHARING THE THINGS WE KNOW AND LOVE, WITH THOSE OF MY KIND – LIBATIONS, SENSATIONS THAT STAGGER THE MIND

October 7, 2004

KASALUKUYANG BINABASA: “the rule of four” nina ian caldwell at dustin thomason. excited akong basahin ito dahil isa na namang secret sect and ancient code story in the tradition of the “da vinci code“. pero according to some of the reviews, it would be a disservice to the authors if you simply compare this new book with the work of dan brown. hekshuli, nabasa ko na ang first chapter and if this is the basis of a comparison between the da vinci code and this book, i would say that “the rule of four” is much better written. sana hindi ako ma disappoint sa huli. ang hula ko eh mamamatay lahat ng mga bida in the end. hehe.

KASALUKUYANG NILALARO: “ang toto ko” – pero minsan-minsan lang (parang si kevin spacey sa “american beauty“). hehehehehehe. seriously – it’s “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 for the Xbox“. ang isang gusto ko rito ay ang “game face” feature kung saan pwede mong i-customize ang hitsura ng player para maging kamukha mo. weird nga ang pakiramdam when you see a replica of yourself inside the game. parang absurd “out of body” experience. di pa ako nakaka hole in one pero ang dami ko nang natalong mga professionals at marami nang mga endorsements. feeling ko nga, playing professional na ako, kahit sa Xbox lang.

KASALUKUYANG PINAKIKINGGAN: “a decade of steely dan” nina walter becker and donald fagen. this is actually our second copy of this CD. nawala yung original namin sa pilipinas at di ko alam kung saan napunta. sa manila last week, nahilo ako sa kakahanap dahil gusto kong marinig ang FM friendly music at quirky lyrics ng steely dan. i’ve been a fan for the longest time – blame it on the influence of my brothers and sisters. paano mo ba naman hindi magugustuhan, with lyrics like: “they got a name for the winners in the world. i want a name when i lose. they call alabama the crimson tide, call me deacon blues“.

KASALUKUYANG PAPANOORIN: “the fog of war” ni errol morris. award winning documentary about a controversial man who was instrumental in shaping american strategy during the vietnam war. ang pelikula ay tungkol sa marathon interviews ni morris kay robert mcnamara. whiz kid who probably was responsible for planning the deaths of so many people in japan in world war ii and of course, the vietnam war. ano ang nasa loob ng kaisipan ng isang napakatalinong tao? may kunsensya pa ba siya, knowing na napakaraming tao ang namatay sa kamay niya. i hope this film answers all these questions. mapanood nga mamayang gabi.

Tama mylab. No biking muna.

Andyan pa yung Tiger Woods game mo.

And then I’ll make you bakwa sandwich and brie on table water.

And your ever present Oolong Tea.

    And me for company.

    May hahanapin ka pa ba?

    Labyu!

    Dear jay,
yeyeyeyeyeesyes, Steely Dan!–could have been Steely Deng if i were God and commanded them to name their band as such, hehehe! Some of my best works were actually done while listening to them-most especially the obscure ones(read ‘not commercial’)–i could have been inspired by the sometimes lascivious lyrics or it could have been the eclectic sound generated by the session musicians this dildo-inspired duo has appropriated to play their music that could have triggered the creative streak, hehehe!
ar yu bek in lasingapore ha,BatJazz?

    android warehoused deng:)

  5. Thanks for the link. May portion doon na agree ako – one thing I did not like about the Da Vinci Code is the apparent super intelligence ng mga bida. Paano ba nilang na solve yung mga ganoong complex na puzzle from the seat of their pants. In less than a week ata that it took to complete the story, they were able to solve all those mysteries in quick succession. Amazing. Hehehe.

Having said that – si Indiana Jones din naman at si MacGyver at ganoon so why should I complain. Let’s just suspend all our disbelief until the novel is through.

  6. sir denx!

  7. Mik Says:

    Hi, Jay!
I want to read “Rule of Four”, too pero hinihintay ko pa yung paperback šŸ˜€ mahal kasi yung hardbound eh…

  8. hey mik.

welcome back. kamusta na? medyo may kamahalan nga ang mga hard bound books. my copy is a soft bound so it’s cheaper than the hard bound but mor expensive than the paper back. iniisip ko, i better buy the larger edition so the drawings and illustrations won’t be too cramped.

niregaluhan ko na si jet ng sims2 last month a few days after the actual release. she is a big fan and she loves this new edition. so far, she hasn’t encountered any bugs, so i guess, as far as she’s concenred. the game’s a big hit.

  9. tanya Says:

hey fafa jay! sorry haven’t been dropping by as often as before.. been pretty busy. Just wanted to let you know that i’m still alive. hehehe!

Da Vinci Code huh? i’m reading Templar Revelation.. the book da vinci is based from. galing… but one has gotta be founded with his beliefs in Christianity before really reading it.. that’s what i think. šŸ™‚

  10. hi tanya.

hmm.. looks like a nice book there that you’re reading. i tihkn i’ve seen it over here pero never got to buy a copy. ewan ko kung bakit.

  11. miel Says:

    BatJazz,
nabasa ko na nga rin pala ang da vinci code, angels and demons at ang templar revelation–although i find angels and demons much more engaging kesa sa da vinci code–could it be because of my fine arts background which is steeped in symbolism, yong archaeology ng ideas, archaeology ng belief systems,lalong-lalo na ang religious system na masyadong subversive especially if translated into codes like the cross, the fish(icthyus)to symbolise christ, and other such abstractions, etc ? we all relate to symbolisms within a shared culture–if you are familiar with umberto eco’s ‘the name of the rose’ this is where it all started out–yong interpretation ng mga systems na ito under what they call semiotics , although there were precedents–pero si eco ang alam kong nagsualt ng mga nobelang ganito ang themes…

  12. AnP Says:

    bastus! hehe

  13. BatJaySutil Says:

siguro nga yung background mo sa fine arts ang nag dictate ng preference mo. alam ko na marami ngang mga symbolism kayong nadaanan especially in your study of the history of art. at more importantly, talagang inherent ang sybolism sa pinag-aralan mong course at doon na rin sa iyong line of work. very powerful kasi ang symbols. you can convey complex messages in such simple forms. maganda nga ang mga example ng symbols doon sa “Angels and Demons” ano? not a bad book to read pag nasa train.

etong binabasa ko ngayon na “The Rule of Four” shows much promise. maganda ang pagkakasulat at muhkang mas may laman. nasa chapter 2 pa lang ako at engrossed na sa pagbasa. sabi sa review para daw itong pinaghalong umberto eco at dan brown. kung kaya, baka humanap din ako ng “The Name of the Rose” after i read this book. ang dami nang mga lumalabas na ganitong genre ano? parang yung “lechon manok” craze sa maynila nung araw. may nag hit na produkto, lahat gusto nang mag join sa bandwagon. which reminds me – ang isa pang nakakatawa eh sa “The Rule of Four” ay yung statement galing sa publishers na nasa backfllap ng libro – this book raw was started by the authors in 1998 when the two best friends graduated in college. parang sinasabi nila na “hindi kami nangopya ng storya sa ‘Da Vinci Code’, matagal na namin itong binabalak at naunahan lang kami”. hehehe.

  15. Dr. Emer Says:

    =)

  16. BatJay Says:

HEHEHEHE… magaling ka talaga doc emer. alam mo ang mga choice words to get my interest.

  17. Mik Says:

Hi, Jay! Kung may illustrations yung Rule of Four baka mas ok nga bilhin yung hardbound…
Mas gusto ko rin yung Angels and Demons kesa sa Da Vinci Code… the one thing I didn’t like about DVC was that it seemed to follow a formula. It was like reading A&D, only not as absorbing. It was interesting to see where the clues led, but the similar patterns to the plot really turned me off. I really enjoyed A&D, though, but I might take a break from Dan Brown books in the meantime šŸ™‚

  18. rolly Says:

Wag masyadong maglaro nun, nakakabulag. šŸ™‚

  19. Renee Says:

    Hi Perskasin!

Hmmm…interesado ako sa “Rule of Four”, if you say it looks like it’s even better than DVC. Actually, the plots of DVC AND A&D were ruined by Dan Brown’s sophomoric writing. He can learn a thing or two from Stephen King.

And oooh…I LOVE STEELY DAN! Brings me back to my RT days! (waxing nostalgic again.)

  20. welcome back mik.

mayron ngang mga illustrations kasi like the da vinci code ay mayron mga puzzles na kailangang i-solve at naka illustrate sa book ang mga iba ibang nga drawings. mayron namang soft cover version na large format – in effect you get the same size as the hard bound with a soft cover. it’s cheaper.

  22. hehey prada mama pinsan.

i’m still reading the “rule of four”. pakonti konti lang pag nasa train. maganda ang pagkagawa. so far, it is still better written than the “da vinci code”.

and of course, steely dan’s still playing in my iPOd especially when i’m riding my bike.
