SARS AND THE TRAVELLING SALESMAN

April 27, 2004

eto ang mask na ginawa ko last year para pang contra SARS. one of the perils of travelling is the possibility of getting sick. nariyan ang SARS at bird flu. last week for instance – naroon ako sa beijing during the time na lumabas ang mga bagong case ng SARS. nasa tokyo na ako ng mabalitaan ko ito pero ninerbyos pa rin ako kahit papaano. ok naman ako ngayon. wala akong fever at di ko nararamdaman yung mga, hah. yung mga, hah… hah… hachooooo! excuse me. di ko nararamdaman yung mga symptoms ng SARS. eto nga pala yung face mask na ginawa ko last year para pang contra SARS. effective naman dahil di ako tinamaan, pero pinagtatawanan ako sa train.

isang misconception about doing work related travel is that it’s glamorous. it’s so far from the truth. nariyan yung long wait sa airport, moving heavy luggage, mga katabing mabahu sa mahabang flight, embarrassing immigration questions dahil you hold a pinoy passport, etc. etc. etc. the first few times probably so, pero after a while, every town will look the same. the people you meet become nameless faces. you’ll get cranky and pretty soon, will loose interest in the great hotel service, the “all you can eat” meals and all the perks that come with the whole travelling package thing-a-majig.

the secret of course, in overcoming all of these difficulties, is making the most of your trip. para sa akin the best way to do it is to immerse myself in the culture of the country i visit. that means staying away from the tourist traps and becoming a native (if only for a few days) – ride their public transport, eat their food, speak their language. it’s not only informative and fun but it’s also the best way to build relationships with your local colleagues.

musta na diha sa vancouver amiga ko? i hope the weather’s better now that it’s spring time. daghang salamat sa imong comment, nga pala. kanusa ka mubalik sa pinas?

hi tanya. ayusin namin ni jet para may barbeque tayo during the week that we’re in manila. masarap pag sa antipolo ginawa dahil mas maganda ang weather.

hi ms. asusera from korea. mahirap nga ang lumaki sa bansang may winter. tinatamad silang maligo. nahihirapan din ako sa mga koreano lalo na pag narito sila sa singapore bumisita. papasok sa opisina namin, suot pa rin yung damit from the previous day, tapos amoy pinaghalong soju at sibuyas.

  7. good morning mylabopmayn! musta ka na diyan? gising na gising ka na. oo nga, one of the best ways to enjoy the long waits is to observe what the locals are doing. it’s the next best thing to do after reading a good book (or sleeping. hehehe). habanaysdeymylab. lab U!
